Brew 7/24/2011

Started new batch of beer.

10lbs of 2 row pale
1lb of 40L Caramel

2 oz of Centennial 60 min, 30min
2 oz of Northern Brewer - 45 Min, 15 min

Safeale 04 yeast.

Results... A very nice hoppy lighter beer. not quite an IPA, overall excellent taste. I was not quite satisfied with the hop profile, may need to bring out the Centennial and less on the NB.

Keg went fast. (For me at least)

UPT/LRR to Barr Camp 5-7-2011

Started out at 8am dropped Trish and Ellie off at Barr Trail Head. Drove back down and ended up way back down in Manitou Springs to find a parking spot. The world was out hiking today. Later in the day I saw the hoards on the incline.

So after packing my stuff up I rode the bike back up Ruxton to the Ute Pass Trailhead(UPT). Its up behind an apt building right before you get to the incline rail station.
The UPT starts gently enough until you hit Rattlesnake canyon. I didnt see any snakes, but, its a bite of a screen slope going straight up to a water treatment plant at the top. Then a bit of a downhill followed by another climb. This continues for about 3 miles until you hit Longs Ranch Road(LRR).

First Mistake...
A quick left up on LRR and take the next left in just a few feet. I screwed up and rode the nicer road up past a gate to a dead end at another water facility. Found a trail from there that ran back down to Cascade. Im screwed now. So down 24 to the gate across from Waldo. Past that gate and 30+ minutes later Im right back at the UPT/LRR intersection. That was no fun.

So after taking the correct road, staying left, you go thru another gate and continue a grind. In a mile or so you hit the first of the J pipes. This is where the climbing gets serious. You climb the next 2 miles and I was pushing the bike a lot. Hoped after the 2nd J pipe it was going to get better. but that was just a momentary respite before more pushing. Great views down to Manitou the whole way.

After the 3rd J pipe, Stay to the right and up. Dont be tempted to go to the left and down. Another hard grind to the top. I rode most of it. At the top you get some great views of the Peak.

Now a short downhill to the intersection of Bob's Road. I stayed right and more uphill, but at least that was all rideable. This ended up taking me to Barr Trail about 1.5 miles from Barr. The next mile isnt bad. After the .5 mile to Barr sign it gets steeper and more technical, but mostly rideable, well at least if you dont already have 4000 vertical ft in your legs.

I met Trish coming back down at about 1 mile from Barr. She waited for me at Barr camp for 50 minutes. That detour cost me from meeting her there. But Ill be way faster on the downhill than she will. I head up to Barr Camp.

I get to Barr Camp and Im feeling pretty good. I finish my Perpetuum, slug a swig of gel and eat a Clif bar while chatting with the camp host. After about 15 minutes, I head back down. Time to see if I can catch Trish.

2nd Mistake...
About .5 miles from BC, I go a bit off trail and stick my hand out to try to keep from clipping the bars on a small tree. That was a bad idea. Excruciating pain in my hand now, cant grip the brakes with the first two fingers. Think I broke my hand.

I decide that taking Bobs Road might be faster as I wont hit any other traffic. I fly back down Bobs and past the Experimental Forest buildings, snap a few pics and on to No Name Creek. No one else out there on a Saturday. I had not seen another person on LRR or Bobs Road. I only saw 2 runners on UPT that I scared as I dont think they expected a biker on it either.

After I hit Barr Trail at NNC, I started seeing hikers, mostly just going back down. Stopped at the incline bailout point and called Trish, she was about .5 mile from the trailhead. I should be able to book it down and come close to catching her. Nope. There was a steady line of hikers on the incline and people all over the place. I hit a lot of hiker traffic and bailed out at the hydro street trail and ripped back down the road and up to the trailhead. Almost puked, I hadn't climbed in about an hr so the legs werent happy.

Trish and Ellie were sitting in the shade waiting for me. Nice to see them again. I ripped down into Manitou and got the truck to come back up and get them.

We went out to lunch at Il Vincinos for post ride beer and pizza. Yum! Then over to pick up Nick from his track meet just as they got finished.

Side note. We watched 127 hrs after the ride. With my hand throbbing, It gave a new reality to the show that I really didnt like.
